In a forceful July 19 editorial, “Columbia Gorge at a Crossroads,” The Oregonian joined Friends of the Columbia Gorge in calling for new leadership for the Columbia Gorge Commission: “Thirteen men and women are charged with protecting the Columbia River Gorge. They are proving woefully inadequate to the task… [The] greatest economic assets today are… the scenic, natural, cultural and recreational resources of this astonishing place. It's time now for the Gorge Commission to have a leader who brings that vision.”

In late June, the Senate Committee on Rules and Executive Appointments removed Commissioner Jeff Condit, the Gorge Commission chair, from the confirmation agenda. Condit’s reappointment was delayed due to an outpouring of public concern over his vote this past spring to approve a private destination resort in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. As Chair, he has presided over the Commission as it ignored the overwhelming numbers of Gorge residents who urged the Commission not to expand commercial and residential development in the Gorge.

Going forward, the Governor can request further consideration of Condit at a September meeting, or withdraw his name from consideration. Please click here to thank members of the Senate Rules Committee who are demanding better leadership on the Gorge Commission.
