May 29, 2007Salem: The bill that will make Oregon a leader in recycling unwanted electronics, HB 2626, sailed through the Senate today with a unanimous vote in favor of the bill, reflecting the unanimous support from the House. HB 2626 has already been referred to as the “feel good environmental legislation of the year,” a moniker that shouldn’t belittle the importance of this legislation.
Once it is signed by the Governor, this bill will provide free, convenient, environmentally responsible recycling opportunities for all Oregonians, particularly residents in rural areas, for their out-dated electronic equipment, including: televisions, personal computers, laptops and monitors.
“HB 2626 is commonsense legislation. It exemplifies the overwhelming bipartisan support to work together, this legislative session, to make sure all Oregonians have the right to a safe and healthy environment,” said Sybil Ackerman, Legislative Affairs Director of the Oregon League of Conservation Voters (OLCV).
“As an Oregonian, I am proud to see that we have reclaimed our role as leader in the world of recycling. Citizens and manufacturers want to make responsible choices when it comes to the environment. We commend the House and the Senate for representing the interests of the voters,” said Katy Daily of Recycling Advocates. She adds, “We owe it to ourselves to settle for nothing less, for our health and a healthy planet.”
A strong electronic recycling program is a priority this Legislative Session of the Oregon Conservation Network (OCN), the coalition of Oregon’s environmental groups.
